Wedding Bouquet 101 : How to Choose the perfect Bouquet for your wedding!

Your bridal bouquet will be one of the most photographed floral pieces the day of your wedding. It will be in all of your portraits, detail photos and that all important photo of you and your love at the end of the aisle. This is why it is important to choose your bouquet with intention and purpose.

Because of these reasons I usually spend the most time with your bridal bouquet. Perfecting every stem and placement. Your bouquet will also usually have the most premium blooms. It seems overwhelming for sure, in this blog we will break down the different types of bouquet shapes as well as some tips on how to choose the best bouquet for you and your wedding.

First let’s break down some of the most popular bouquet shape.

Round

The most common type of bouquet, elegant yet traditional. Round bouquets can be tightly packed with blooms or loose and airy to create more of a garden feel. These bouquets are hand spiralled and look best with everything. Truly a bouquet of all trades.

Some of our favourite blooms to use in round bouquets include: Roses, Ranunculus, Peonies, garden roses and lisianthus.

Cascade

Cascade bouquets are THE way to make a statement with your bouquet. Although you may immediately think of your mom’s bouquet from the 80’s with modern and intentional floral choices it will look straight out of the photos from a wedding magazine.

Fun fact! Princess Diana’s wedding bouquet was 3 cascading bouquets combined together.

Some of our favourite blooms to get that cascading bouquet look are: Phalaenopsis orchids, anthuriums, and Amaranthus.

Oversized

Sometimes when it comes to bouquets, bigger is better. If you have a more simple outfit a large bridal bouquet will help to create a sense of whimsy and grandeur. If you’re already having a more lavish affair, you need to make sure your bouquet matches the maximalist vibes.

Some of our favourite blooms to use in oversized bouquets include: Garden roses, dahlias, peonies, protea, orchids.

Pageant

Also referred to “Sheath bouquets” pageant bouquets are a collection of long stemmed blooms that you would lay across your arms instead of holding them directly in your hands. This is a stunning bouquet for a modern wedding. The simplicity of the style lends itself to beautiful clean lines.

Some of our favourite blooms to use in Pageant bouquets are: Calla lily, delphiniums, larkspur, long stemmed roses.

Posy

Most often reserved for bridesmaid bouquets, these bouquets are usually smaller in size but still are the perfect place to make and impact. These bouquets are usually finished with a satin ribbon which lends to perfect opportunity to add some colour to your wedding.

Some of our favourite flowers to use in posy bouquets are: Tulips, gerbera daisy, hyacinth, and astilbe

Single Variety Floral Bouquets

These bouquets have been extremely on trend this year, using only one type of floral creates an understated elegance. These bouquets are usually smaller in size.

Some of our favourite blooms to use in these bouquets include Lily of the Valley, Freesia, Roses, oncidium orchids.

Beyond the shape and style of your bouquet you must consider that you will be the one holding it.

If you are tiny, an oversized or cascading bouquet maybe overwhelming for you. Similarly, if your dress or outfit has a tone of detail you may want to choose a more simple bouquet so it does not compete.

It is also important to consider where and when your wedding bouquet is. You may want to avoid a bouquet full of hydrangea in the middle of the August heat. Your bouquet will be put down and picked up all day and it is important that there is a place to put your bouquet.

If you’re still trying to decide on your bridal bouquet that’s totally ok. Bridal bouquets are our favourite piece to make for your wedding and we would love to help you decide.
